Guru Banshidhar Mahat is one of the foremost exponents of the Purulia style of Chhau, was born in 1950 in Anda village, Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Jharkhand, to Late Haru Mahat and Late Leelamoni Mahat. Trained initially by his father, he later joined Padma Shri Gambhir Singh Mura’s troupe, where he became one of the lead performers and Mura’s close companion. Renowned for his portrayal of Lord Krishna, Guru Banshidhar has represented India in international festivals across Europe, the USA, Japan, and Thailand. In 2000, he founded his own Chhau troupe and has since been performing widely across Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the country. A respected Chhau guru, he continues to mentor numerous troupes in Jharkhand and Purulia, preserving and promoting the Purulia Chhau tradition. Contact: 9523175891
